Protected Left Turn at 51st, Broadway Set for Completion on March 8th

On Monday, February 29th, City crews broke ground preparing for the restriping of Broadway to accommodate a designated turn lane at 51st Street. TxDOT recently approved the City’s request to perform a lane shift and restripe the roadway from 48th Street to 53rd Street allowing for safer traffic flow without disturbing the historic Broadway medians. This is a key intersection along the City’s gateway that serves as the main thoroughfare for access to Pelican Island.

Over the next week, contractors will be restriping 51st Street, including both the northbound and southbound lanes, in preparation for the signal changes and the areas between 50th and 51st Streets will be designated as parallel parking zones. To ensure properly synchronized traffic flow, necessary signal repairs and upgrades to the 51st Street light will be completed. As a result of these upgrades, both northbound and southbound traffic will have protected left turn signals.

On Monday, March 7th, contractors will begin restriping Broadway and on Tuesday, March 8th, the signal timing switch over to include the protected left turn signal will occur from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM completing the project. Please note single lane closures will occur impacting traffic flow during this time frame. GPD Officers will provide traffic control during the signal switch over to minimize vehicular congestion as much as possible.

While the entire project is anticipated to take just under two weeks to finish, the restriping process should be completed in two to three days. “Improving traffic flow and creating a safer commute for our residents and visitors is of utmost importance,” stated Public Works Director Kyle Hockersmith. “Working to provide this much needed infrastructure enhancement is a reflection of the City’s continued investment in improving our community.”
