City, CenterPoint Energy Upgrading Street Lights to LED

In September of 2015, the City enrolled in CenterPoint Energy’s LED Street Light Conversion Program to upgrade all existing street lights maintained by CenterPoint within Galveston. For the same tariff that the City currently pays, each street light will be converted to a more energy efficient LED fixture. Anticipated to take approximately twelve to eighteen months to complete, this program allows all street lights maintained by CenterPoint to be inspected, converted, and replaced as necessary.

To ensure all street lights are converted, CenterPoint crews are following a phased installation approach working from the east end to the west end of the Island. Crews began with the major thoroughfares and have already completed over forty percent of the conversions scheduled. Once this phase is complete, they will transition into the neighborhoods. Please note that other issues that delay the process may be identified including the need for new wiring or a need for complete replacement. Street lights that have additional maintenance needs will be repaired or replaced as needed to ensure that each street light is functioning properly.

The conversion to LED fixtures will reduce light pollution, provide uniformity in both the type of light emitted as well as the style of fixture used across the Island, and increase energy efficiency by lowering energy consumption city-wide supporting a more “green” environment. LEDs also use approximately fifty percent less electricity than traditional options and last substantially longer reducing maintenance costs. Even though all street lights will be serviced, residents are still encouraged to report an outage to CenterPoint.

Reporting a Street Light Outage
To report a street light outage, contact CenterPoint Energy by calling 713-207-2222 or 1-800-332-7143 and provide either the six-digit identification number found on the light pole or a physical address nearest to the outage.

A report may also be submitted online at www.centerpointelectric.com/cehe/support/streetlight using either the six-digit identification number found on the light pole or an interactive map.
