Reconstruction of 65th and 69th Street Begins September 19th

On Monday, September 19th crews will begin the reconstruction of 65th Street from Heards Lane to Golf Crest and 69th Street from Seawall to Stewart Rd. Much like the projects to reconstruct 43rd and 53rd, the reconstruction of 65th and 69th will include the replacement of the asphalt road surface with concrete and the complete overhaul of underground drainage and utilities. This street project is funded with federal grant dollars which requires the installation of accessible sidewalks and ramps. These will be constructed in the City’s rights-of-way meaning some trees and landscape adjacent to the curb will be affected. The contractors for each project will be reaching out to residents who have landscaping in the right of ways to give them an opportunity to relocate affected vegetation. There will also be various sections of existing driveways and sidewalks that will be removed and replaced as the project progresses.

The 65th Street project will be completed in two phases with partial roadway closures and detours throughout the project. The first phase of the 65th reconstruction will be from Heards Lane to Stewart. Beginning September 19th the west half of the street will be closed heading south and there will be no parking on the northbound lane during construction. During the second phase, Stewart to Golf Crest will be closed in sections throughout.

The 69th Street project will be completed in two phases with partial roadway closures and detours throughout the project. Beginning September 19th the west half of the roadway will be closed having traffic detoured to one lane on the east half of 69th Street. During the second phase the east half of the roadway will be closed have traffic detoured to one lane on the west half of 69th Street. With both projects, additional side street roadway closures may occur as the construction progresses.

The City of Galveston received Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) disaster recovery funds to pay for both the 65th and 69th Streets projects. City Council awarded the 65th Street contract to Meiners Construction and 69th Street to Triple B Services. The 65th Street reconstruction is expected to take 300 calendar days with a completion of July 2017. The 69th Street reconstruction is expected to take 210 calendar days with a completion date of April 2017.
