Galveston, TX – August 4, 2017 – Another wave of progress began to roll across the island Friday as City crews began installing the first of 88 LED street signs at 21st and Broadway. Equipped with censors, these backlit street signs will come on at dusk and remain lit throughout the night making it easier for drivers to navigate through the corridor. This phase of the project will include 22 intersections between 6th Street and 61st Street along Broadway and crews expect to have all signs installed by the end of September.

These street signs are built and mounted to meet windstorm regulations, are made of rust resistant powder coated aluminum, and will be maintained by the traffic department. Funding for the project came from the City’s infrastructure set-aside fund and this phase of the project will cost approximately $120,000 to complete.

“Lighted street signs, especially on Broadway, has been a request we have heard from our citizenry for years,” said the Director of Public Works Kyle Hockersmith. “We look forward to the day when these street signs are prominent in all five major corridors making the City that much easier to navigate at night.”

Once the Broadway corridor is complete, the City will begin to implement the program in the other four main corridors – 61st Street, Harborside Dr, Seawall Blvd, and 25th Street.
