Market Street Reconstruction Project Kicks Off August 8th

MARKETST

(GALVESTON, TX) August 8, 2017 – On Tuesday August 8th, crews began the reconstruction of Market Street from 19th Street to 25th Street.  Much like the projects to reconstruct 43rd, 53rd, 65th and 69th, the reconstruction of Market Street will include the replacement of the asphalt road surface with concrete and the complete overhaul of underground drainage and utilities.

Since the street project is funded with federal grant dollars, it requires the installation of accessible sidewalks and ramps. These will be constructed in the City’s right-of-way, which means some trees and landscape adjacent to the curb will be affected. The contractors for each project will be reaching out to residents and business owners who have landscaping in the right-of-way. This will give them an opportunity to relocate affected vegetation. As the project progresses, various sections of existing driveways and sidewalks will be removed and replaced.

Upcoming Road Closures:

  • Market Street from 19th to 25th will have the north side west bound traffic lane closed to one-way traffic in phases from August 8th to December 10th.
  • The intersection of Market and 23rd Street will be closed from August 14th to October 9th.
  • The north bound right lane of 25th Street will be closed a half block north and south of Market from August 8th to October 3rd.
