HARVEY: Rumor Control

In an effort to calm some concerns, we want to address the following rumors:

August 29, 2017

  • The Causeway is NOT closed. Check for road closures.
  • The City did NOT shut off any utilities.
  • We did NOT evacuate residents. On Sunday, August 27, the 161 victims who were rescued from the flooding in Dickinson, were taken by Island Transit buses from the IH45 and 517 overpass to temporary shelters overnight. Those who choose to go were flown to shelters in north Texas.
  • We also have several state assets on the island ready to assist in any efforts.
  • City water was always safe to drink throughout the event.
  • Amphibious vehicles were escorted off of their base, located on Galveston Island, by the Galveston Police Department to the mainland to assist in continued rescue efforts in Dickinson.

  • We are NOT sending people to your homes to test water. THIS IS A SCAM. We have been receiving calls from residents asking if the water is contaminated and/or stating that they received a call from someone asking to set up an appointment to test their water due to the recent hurricane. This is NOT the City conducting the calls AND THIS IS A SCAM. We test the water for bacteria’s at 31 different sites monthly and all tests have been negative for bacteria. IF you have recently paid an individual to test your water and feel that you may have fallen victim to a fraudulent business, you should contact the Galveston Police Department to file a report at 409-765-3702.

Please help us share this information with Galveston residents.
