Galveston Fire Department Offers Assistance to Port Arthur Fire Department

GALVESTON - September 1, 2017 - The Galveston Fire Department deployed two fire trucks and eight firefighters to Port Arthur on Friday afternoon. Through our partnership with the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), these firefighters will supplement their fire department operations for up to 10 days. After devastating flooding that had major impacts to fleet and facilities, this will aid PAFD as they begin to shift gears into recovery mode.

“Galveston has seen the devastation that overwhelms Port Arthur and the surrounding communities,” said Fire Chief Mike Wisko. “We are thankful that through our partnership with TIFMAS we are able to come to their aid. This will provide a sigh of relief that will allow them to begin putting the pieces of their community back together again.”

Leading the effort is Captain Mike Varela Jr, Engineer Bryan Lee, Engineer Kevin Wright, Engineer James Yancey, Firefighter Chris Anderson, Firefighter Tim Bergeron, Firefighter Jeremy Dixon and Firefighter Steven Beall.

“This is one more example of Texans helping Texans, and I could not be more proud of our firefighters who have accepted this assignment. When Galveston needed help, they came from across the state and this is how we re-pay those folks.”

All personnel and operating expenses, including use of the trucks, will be reimbursed to the City of Galveston, by the State of Texas and there will be minimal impact on our department.
