TxDOT Embarks On Major Construction Project At Tiki Island Exit

GALVESTON, TX (December 12, 2017) – TxDOT’s contractor Durwood Greene began a four-month long project doing bridge repairs on IH-45 Northbound at Tiki Dr in Tiki Island. The repairs will cause a single lane nclosure continuously throughout the project and concrete jersey barriers are in place to narrow traffic while the work is being done.

Throughout the project two lanes will be open while work is being performed. Intermittent closure of an additional lane may be needed for safety; however, those closures will be announced in advance onwww.houstontranstar.org. The project’s anticipated completion date is March 15, 2018.

Due to the increased congestion that drivers are already experiencing, we are asking those leaving the island to plan ahead and anticipate delays.

“The congestion we felt today and yesterday was due to the installation of the concrete jersey barriers,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “While we anticipate there to be slowdowns in the area, we do believe the worst of it is behind us for now and hope that the congestion will ease up for our commuters.”

Any additional lane closures or changes to the schedule will be updated on the City’s website, social media, and municipal channel.
