City Encourages Upcoming Professionals to Apply for Summer Internships

(GALVESTON, TX) March 19, 2018 – As the next generation of leaders comes closer to completing their journey in education, the City is looking to capture their talents offering paid internship positions in various departments. An investment in our future, these positions have been created to promote an interest in local government and develop our workforce. These internships focus on the area of study that they are most interested in and introduce the selected students to the role of city government in a community.

“As someone who has worked for both private sector and local government, the importance of this program is vital to our organization,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “Allowing these students to have hands-on opportunities serving the public in any capacity can spark an interest that will serve a community for a lifetime. Those types of employees are the ones we hope to capture with these positions.”

Last year the City introduced the program with three interns who spent their summer serving the citizens of Galveston. Melissa Thompson, an intern last summer who recently graduated, is now a valued member of the organization serving in her role as a Purchasing Specialist.

“My experience as an intern far exceeded my expectations,” said Melissa. “Not only was I able to gain an overall understanding of the role of local government within my community, but I was also able to transition from intern to a full-time employee with an organization I hope to contribute to for years to come.”
