GPD delivers 27 A/C units to families in need

Galveston, TX – August 6, 2018 – On Monday, August 6th, the Galveston Police Department delivered 27 A/C units, donated by The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA), to elderly families in the community. Thanks to the anonymous contributions made to the “Out of the Blue” fund, CPAAA was able to purchase the 6000 BTU window units at McCoy’s Building Supply, a local store in Galveston, TX.

This is the second year that CPAAA has reached out to the community looking for families in need of an A/C unit. The elderly families who received this donation solicited assistance from local churches, such as Moody Methodist Church, Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church, First Union Baptist Church and Coastal Community Church.

Our GPD officers delivered the 27 A/C units to 16 different locations. Some units were delivered to the local churches, who assisted with the installation, and other units were delivered to the homes of the families in need.

Officer Jovan Harris, Special Operations & CPA Liaison, coordinated this project.  “This is a way to let the community know that we are here for our citizens, all of them, children and elderly alike. The only way to show that is to be with the community,” Officer Harris said.

Chief Vernon Hale was part of the team that helped deliver the donations throughout the day. “We are Galveston Island, we are all one and we have to help anywhere we can,” Chief Vernon Hale said. “Our intent is to help those in need and carry the legacy.”

The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association was created to support and assist the Galveston Police Department, foster a positive image, and support the community in need. “The City of Galveston is proud of the residents who volunteer their time to be part of great organizations like the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.  The members of CPAAA are great ambassadors to the city and will continue to reach out to the community to see where the needs are,” said Brian Maxwell, City Manager.
