For the first time, a fleet of tall ships will sail and race their way along the Gulf Coast to participate in the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Gulf Coast 2018 series of races and public maritime festivals. Kicking off this new event, Galveston Island will play host to the first stop of the 2018 challenge from April 5-8, 2018. Produced by Galveston Historical Foundation, in partnership with Tall Ships America, this new festival will host tours of the participating ships, numerous special events, sail away excursions, music, food and fun in a family friendly format. The Grand Kids Festival returns for their 23rd year to the heart of the Galveston Downtown Cultural Arts District: Post Office Street (20th to 23rd) on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The family-friendly event offers three outdoor stages, a storytelling tent, and over a dozen activity areas and booths including arts and crafts and a petting zoo. Food and beverages will also be available. Designed to develop an arena for participation, the festival offers something for children of all ages and cultures. The Wicked Wine Run returns on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 at 3:30pm at the East Beach Pavilion. This unique event features a 5K Run with celebratory wine at the finish and 1K Tasting Walk with 4 wine tasting stops along the beach, as well as food and live music! A small portion of Apffel Park Road between the Beach and an area connecting to East Beach Drive will be closed for the duration of the 5K (beginning at 5:30pm) and 1K (beginning at 7:00pm) and will immediately reopen following completion of the 5K. Residents of Beachtown will have access via East Beach Drive for the entire event. Visitors to East Beach will have access via Boddeker Drive.
