A Welcome Message From The Chief
Welcome to our web site, we appreciate your interest in the first paid fire department in Texas. Established as a group of volunteer organizations in 1841, city leaders voted to create a fully paid fire department in 1885. GFD has a long history of dedicated firefighters who have faced countless major incidents and major hurricanes. We are rich with history and consider ourselves lucky to serve such a wonderful island community with the best citizens in the world.
Today, with 115 uniformed personnel and 6 civilian personnel, we are divided into five divisions including Prevention, Operations, Special Operations, Emergency Management and Administration. There are six fire stations across the Island and we operate 10 front line apparatus daily. We average over 7,500 emergency responses, 35,000 training hours, 1,500 commercial business inspections and many public safety events annually.
We hope you find everything you are looking for on our site and encourage you to contact us with questions and/or suggestions. Stay safe and welcome to Galveston!
