Galveston, TX – October 28, 2020 – The City of Galveston is hosting “Drive-Thru Boo!”, a trunk-or-treating event at McGuire Dent Recreation Center this Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
Galveston families are invited to join the City of Galveston’s Parks and Recreation and Community Outreach departments for a drive-thru trick-or-treating event hosted at McGuire Dent Recreation Center, 2222 28th Street in Galveston.
We invite families to don their Halloween costumes and visit the recreation center. City staff will have tents set up along the driveway of the McGuire Dent Recreation Center to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Staff will be wearing masks and ask attendees to wear them as well.
“Halloween is different this year because of COVID-19, but we still want to provide an opportunity for island children to celebrate the holiday safely with this limited contact event,” City Manager Brian Maxwell said.
Please plan to join us on Friday, October 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., while supplies last.
The City of Galveston does not organize trick-or-treating in neighborhoods. While the CDC has discouraged trick-or-treating and we urge residents to follow this guidance, we understand that some residents may still intend to participate in traditional trick or treating.
- Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters.
- Give out treats outdoors, if possible
- Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take
- Wash hands before handling treats
- Wear a mask: make your cloth mask part of your costume
- Keep at least six feet distance from those not in your household
Also from the CDC, here are some ideas for safer alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating:
Decorate and carve pumpkins
- Decorate your home for Halloween.
- Carve pumpkins with members of your household or outside with neighbors or friends.
- Walk from house to house, admiring Halloween decorations at a distance.
Visit an orchard, forest, or corn maze. Attend a scavenger hunt.
- Go on an outdoor Halloween-themed scavenger hunt.
- Visit a pumpkin patch or orchard. Remember to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently, especially after touching frequently touched surfaces, pumpkins, or apples.
- Go to a one-way, walk-through haunted forest or corn maze.
Other Ideas
- Hide Halloween treats in and around your house. Hold a Halloween treat hunt with household members.
- Hold an outdoor costume parade or contest so everyone can show off their costumes.
- Host an outdoor Halloween movie night with friends or neighbors or an indoor movie night with your household members.
