Galveston, TX – February 15, 2021 – The City of Galveston is opening a warming center at the McGuire Dent Recreation Center beginning Monday, February 15, 2021 at 6 p.m. It will remain open until Tuesday morning.
The McGuire Dent Recreation Center, 2222 28th Street, will serve as a warming center for the public, particularly the city’s most vulnerable populations. The public is invited to use the heated recreation center community room. The City will not have meals or beds available at the center.
People will be rapid COVID-19 tested and have their temperature taken upon entry. People will be required to wear masks inside the building.
Please note that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the night with roads being difficult and dangerous to travel. If you’re able to stay home and keep under blankets, then we recommend staying home and avoiding traveling on the roads.
The latest weather forecast appears it could dip into the teens with snow and ice.
There have been power outages across the state due to a statewide energy crisis. It is possible this could continue overnight.
We recommend having any necessary medications and food and water for two to three days. Follow us for updates on galvestontx.gov and social media @CityofGalveston.
