Galveston voters elected Sharon B. Lewis as the District 1 council representative for the seven-member Galveston City Council in a special election held Saturday.
Lewis garnered 80 percent of the vote in a three-way race against candidates Mary Branum and Bill Keese, according to election results.
Ms. Lewis will be formally sworn in as the representative of District 1 during the September 8 council meeting. The seat has been vacant since April when former councilman E.R. Johnson passed away. The Galveston City Council sought and received permission from the state to hold a special election before the typical November elections so the district would have a representative.
Ms. Lewis’ term will expire in May 2022, though she will be eligible to run again at that time. The City of Galveston thanks all voters for their civic participation and all candidates for their willingness to serve. Council positions are unpaid.
