GALVESTON, TX – July 19, 2022 – Are you interested in serving your city in an area of interest and expertise?
The Galveston City Council is considering appointments for several city boards and commissions, and we encourage interested residents to apply.
The City Council will consider appointments to the boards and commission during the September 15, 2022 council meeting. Certain boards -- Planning Commission, Wharves Board and Park Board -- require candidate interviews. The deadline for these applications is August 25, 2022 at 5 p.m. Interviews for the planning commission and wharves board open positions will take place on September 8, 2022. Park board appointments occurred earlier this summer.
At this time, the City of Galveston is accepting applications for 14 different boards and commissions for positions expiring at the end of September. Some positions are eligible for potential reappointment, while others are term-limited.

Animal Services Advisory Board: To establish guidelines for interacting with animals and responding to calls for service that involve animals.
Arts & Historic Preservation Advisory Board: To make recommendations to the Council for the distribution of a portion of hotel occupancy taxes set aside for arts and historic preservation. Two positions are up for reappointment.
Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals: The board shall act upon matters as it is required or authorized to consider by ordinance or state law; hear appeals from decisions of the building official, fire code official, or code official; hear and act upon the provisions and requests for interpretations of the City Code and the provisions of the International Code Council. Three of the seven positions are up for appointment. A general contractor position is term-limited.
Cultural Arts Commission: To further the Fine Arts on Galveston Island through the recognition and development of excellence and all aspects of the cultural arts in the community, and ensure the accessibility of the arts by all. Three positions are up for reappointment, including two at-large positions and one visual or performing arts position.
Ethics Commission: The commission shall investigate any alleged violation of the city charter. Seven of the seven positions are up for appointment or reappointment. Three of the seven positions are term-limited.
Families, Children and Youth Board: The mission of the Families, Children, and Youth Board is to promote the physical, academic, psycho-social, and character development of all families, children, and youth in the City of Galveston.
Finance, Fiscal Affairs and Investment Committee: To review and evaluate for the purpose of making recommendations to Council, review of the city's financial statements and reports, audit, budget and budget performance, fund accounting and fund balances, and financial management policies. The committee shall also review investment recommendations, review investment reports, oversee the city's investment portfolio to ensure compliance with state law, adopt a list of qualified brokers authorized to engage in investment transactions, and approve the independent source providing state-mandated investment training. There are two positions up for appointment and reappointment.
Galveston Island Redevelopment Authority/Galveston Housing Finance Corporation/Galveston Property Finance Authority: To create, support and promote endeavors that enhance housing opportunities and business growth, and to serve as a catalyst for private development and redevelopment in the commercial corridors and waterfront areas of the City of Galveston.
Galveston Wharves Board: The Board of Trustees shall have those powers which are necessary or proper to the discharge of their responsibilities including, but not being limited to, the election of a Chairman, the employment of a general manager for
Galveston Wharves and such subordinate officers and employees as may be required for the proper conduct of the Galveston Wharves, the preparation of budgets, the fixing of charges, the authorization of expenditures, the acquisition of properties, the determination of policies, and, in general, the complete management and control of the Galveston Wharves and the income and revenue thereof, subject only to the special limitations herein provided. All meetings of the Board of Trustees shall be open to the public excepting only for executive sessions held to discuss personnel appointments or to discuss or act upon matters of concern to the competitive position of the Galveston Wharves as a port facility. Two positions are up for appointment or reappointment. One position is term-limited.
Landmark Commission: The commission has original jurisdiction of the application process for designation of property as a “Galveston Landmark”; the application process for designation of an area as a historic zoning district; and the application process for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Two positions are up for reappointment.
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board: Assists the City Manager and City Council in developing an overall program for parks and recreation for the City. There are four positions open for reappointment.
Planning Commission: The Planning Commission duties are to make, amend, extend, or add to a Master Plan for the physical development of the City; recommend to the City Council approval or disapproval of proposed changes in the zoning plan; approve or disapprove the platting or subdividing of land within the corporate limits of the City and within adjacent areas as permitted by law. Two positions are open for appointment or reappointment.
Tree Committee: The committee was created to make recommendations to City Council regarding Galveston trees and vegetation. Two positions are open for reappointment or appointment.
Zoning Board of Adjustments: The board is authorized, in appropriate cases and subject to appropriate conditions and safeguards, to make special exceptions to the terms of the zoning ordinance that are consistent with the general purpose and intent of the ordinance and in accordance with any applicable rules contained in the ordinance. The Zoning Board of Adjustment is the only board that has final authority over their decisions. All other Boards make recommendations to the City Council. Three member positions are up for appointment or reappointment, and one alternate position is vacant.
