Man killed in car crash involving Island Transit trolley

Galveston, TX – October 21, 2019 – A 30-year-old man died Sunday night after a vehicle collision involving an Island Transit trolley bus.

On Sunday at approximately 10:00 p.m., dispatch received a report of a major accident involving an Island Transit trolley at the intersection of 7th Street and Avenue J. Dispatch advised emergency responders that the driver of a Honda Accord was pinned under the trolley.

Police, fire and EMS arrived at the scene and immediately began attending to the trapped driver. Responders reached the man and found he did not have a pulse or vital signs. EMS transported the man to John Sealy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:32 p.m. The deceased man has been identified as Joseph Reyna (DOB 12-1-1988.)

At the accident scene, a dog was found deceased on the passenger side floorboard caused by injuries sustained in the crash.

The Galveston Police Department performed a preliminary investigation at the scene. Investigators with the Accident Reconstruction team determined the Island Transit trolley was traveling westbound on Avenue J and made a left turn southbound on 7th Street. The Honda Accord was traveling eastbound in the inside left lane and struck the trolley in the intersection, causing the vehicle to become pinned under the trolley.

The Island Transit trolley operator was transported to the hospital in stable condition and has since been released from the hospital. Per City of Galveston policy, the trolley driver was tested for drugs and alcohol.

The accident remains under investigation. The City of Galveston will release information as it becomes available.
