City of Galveston confirms compliance with state financial reporting requirements

Community News Posted on April 09, 2026

The Office of the Texas Attorney General has issued requests to municipalities across the state seeking financial audit documentation as part of an effort to ensure compliance with Senate Bill 1851, a law requiring timely publication of annual financial audits as a condition for certain property tax actions.

The City of Galveston is fully compliant with Senate Bill 1851 and has consistently met all requirements related to financial transparency and reporting. The City has published its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report on its website since Fiscal Year 2015, making it readily accessible to the public. Residents and stakeholders can view the report at www.galvestontx.gov/financialtransparency.

On Wednesday, the City Secretary’s Office received a formal Public Information Request from the Attorney General’s Office seeking financial audit documentation. The City fulfilled this request promptly, providing all requested information by Thursday morning, April 9, 2026. Electronic acknowledgement of the receipt of this submission was provided by the Attorney General’s Office on April 9th.

“The City of Galveston takes transparency and accountability seriously,” City Manager Brian Maxwell said. “We have long made our financial documents, including the budget and audit reports, publicly available online.”

The City remains committed to open government practices and ensuring residents have easy access to important financial information.
